Project 3 - Fan Site

Now that you are familiar with HTML, you will have the opportunity to create a Dreamweaver project in order to utilize the software's design and site management tools. The Fan Site assignment requires you to build a Dreamweaver Web site that includes at least 5 HTML pages (one default page and four linked pages),which reflect a personal interest. Your fan site should be on one of the following:

  • a rock band
  • a celebrity
  • a movie or TV show
  • a computer game

Your fan site must have a consistent design throughout the site. In other words, each page must have the same color scheme, text, image and link properties, and navigation scheme.

In addition, your fan site must incorporate the following:

  • titles on every page
  • a navigation structure on every page
  • a page background color
  • text with a different Link color
  • text with a different Viewed Link color
  • at least one heading per page
  • at least one ordered list
  • at least one unordered list
  • at least one definition list (with definitions in a different style)
  • at least one Flash Text
  • at least one Flash button
  • at least one image on every page
  • at least one example of a text-wrapped image
  • at least one page with navigation to multiple anchors (at least 3) on the same page
  • at least one link to an external site that opens in a new window (no remote links should open in the same window - don't let anyone leave your site!)
  • at least one page with an image map with at least three hotspots (You might want this to be your default page. The map should not be a treasure hunt (ask me!). One idea - make a collage in Fireworks - and make each separate image a hotspot. There should also be text links available to the same locations) As an example, check out this sample image map on the CHS web site.

Here is a sample 5-page structure for a Band site:

  • Home Page with image map to
    • Bio page
    • Pictures
    • Tour dates
    • downloadable music (mp3s only)

In addition to programming a Web site, you will be expected to complete a style guide which will include sections for page copy and header styles, image and navigation documentation, and hexadecimal color codes. Consequently, the grade for this project will be based both on the Web site itself and the style guide you create. To get started: create a new folder called Fan Site. All of your files (html, image, etc.) should be found inside this one folder.

Grading criteria

  • DESIGN (50%)
Integration of content and graphical theme: Are all pages uniform? Does the graphical look fit with the projected target audience? Is the content appropriate to the purpose of the site? This includes navigation, interface design and web aesthetics; pay attention to details.
    See rubric.

  • CONTENT (50%)
All content items listed above are included in finished project including a comprehensive style guide. All pages should be appropriately titled. All images should have Alt text. File structure, default page, linking, and image maps should all work accurately. The HTML code should be clean. This should be all your work - not someone else's code. See rubric.
