About the Pitts Choir

The Pitts Singing Group is a national choir that travels all over the country performing. This choir has been in existence for over 75 years and is one of the oldest travelling singing groups in the United States. See our Live Performances to see if we are coming to a town near you soon!

The Pitts Choir presents programs of anthems and large choral works. It sings for both school and community functions, hosts the Lakeshore High School Choral Festival, and tours in the United States during the college’s Spring Break. Every third J-Term the choir tours in Europe. It is under the direction of Dr. Michael Burkhardt, Director of Choral Activities. Membership in the Carthage Choir is by individual audition.

Founded by Prof. Elmer Hanke in 1926, the Carthage Choir is believed to be the second-oldest touring college SATB choir in America.

The choir is also very active abroad, having made its first European tour in the summer of 1966. Since 1973 it has presented three-week concert tours every third January in Europe, singing in Holland, France, East and West Germany, Switzerland, Austria, The Czech Republic, Italy and Poland.
